Study in Denmark: Housing & Living Costs
Interested in studying abroad in Denmark? Our Study in Denmark guide will outline student housing options and living costs, as well as information about the Danish higher education system.
The cost of living in Denmark is generally high. Living in Copenhagen can cost between EUR 1,280 and 1,800 per month, whilst the recommended monthly budget for smaller cities such as Aalborg averages about EUR 1,000 per month.
However, for EU/EEA and Swiss students, it is worth remembering that Danish universities do not charge tuition fees to EU/EEA and Swiss students, so you significantly save on cost here.
Some average living costs throughout Denmark are:
Meal | EUR 18 |
Coffee | EUR 6 |
Beer | EUR 7 |
Cinema Ticket | EUR 16 |
Monthly Rent | 1-bedroom apartment: EUR 500 - 1,350 |
Monthly Transport | EUR 50 - 80 |
Most students in Denmark live in off-campus student halls of residence, as it is usually very easy to commute into Danish city centers. If the idea of student halls does not appeal to you, then you can choose to rent a room from an independent landlord or through an estate agent.
Here are some details about the different housing options available to you:
Student halls of residence (kollogier)
Living in student halls is a great way to make friends and settle in, especially during your first year. It is also the cheapest option – an estimate of the cost of living in halls would be about EUR 240 - 460 per month.
Visit the Study in Denmark website for a list of student housing links.
University-owned student accommodation
Many universities also own housing that they rent to their students. You can only apply for this accommodation if you are an admitted student. Most institutes have an Accommodation Office where you can direct applications and queries.
Please note that not all universities are able to guarantee all students a place with their university-owned accommodation – student housing is competitive so it is advisable to start the process of looking for accommodation as soon as possible.
Privately rented room in a house/apartment
Prices for privately rented accommodation fluctuate greatly depending on location, size and quality. The rent averages between EUR 270 and EUR 600 per month in Denmark.
Housing in Danish cities is especially pricey – the rent of a 1-bedroom apartment in central Copenhagen averages EUR 1350 per month – so it is often a good idea to search the suburbs of a city. Here you can find cheaper hidden gems, and commuting into city centers is usually very easy.
