Introduction
Bachelor of Hotel Management
At the start you immediately choose one of our specializations: Culinary Arts or Hospitality Management . Both specializations offer a solid base of management, communication and teamwork. In addition, you will receive very specific courses that offer a wide range of employment opportunities as a manager in hospitality or chef in top restaurants, but as a graduate in hotel management you will also be highly sought after by many other sectors.
Hospitality Management: The Hospitality Management specialisation offers a high level of professional knowledge and skills, three or four foreign languages, a strong economic foundation, good ICT skills, the ability to work in a team, presentation skills and international experience. These competencies are also highly appreciated in many other industries and will offer you the opportunity to continue your studies and obtain a Master’s Degree or an additional Bachelor’s Degree. Hospitality Management students are dynamic and interested in frequent social contacts, challenges and creative teamwork. A prior qualification from a catering school is not required. There is more to learning than studying alone. If you want, you can join SorHoMa, the student club for Hotel Management. The student club organises all kinds of activities for the students in the programme and a colloquium with keynote speakers from the hospitality sector. The programme is highly focused on practical experience. This is illustrated by the many projects, industry contacts and internships. During the ‘Café CuiZien’ project, for example, you and a number of fellow students will develop your own catering business by engaging in teamwork and by combining your language and presentation skills and your creative, economic and hospitality competencies. Direct contact with people in the field is an essential part of the course. In the first year, you will complete a one-week exploratory internship. In the second year, you will do a 6-week operational internship. The third year includes an 18-week management internship. The course also pays a great deal of attention to the development of your international network. International contacts are essential for the hospitality managers of the future. In addition to a study trip and your international internship, you can also choose from a number of international projects as part of an international case. The facts speak for themselves: all our students complete an internship at renowned hotel chains and 80% of internships are located in France, Germany, Norway, the Canary Islands, the Netherlands, Austria and so on. You will receive an Erasmus scholarship for an international internship”
Culinary Arts: You are a professional who is perfectly at home in the fascinating world of the restaurant business. Our programme offers a firm base of classes in management, ICT, communication and teamwork. On top of that, you will get specific practical and theoretical courses that will lead to a bright future as a chef in a renowned restaurant.
If you have a passion for restaurants and cooking, the Culinary Arts-specialisation of the Bachelor in Hotel Management is something right up your alley. If you don’t have a degree in cooking, we organise a summer school, to prepare you for all practical kitchen courses. All practical courses take place in the former Michelin 3-star restaurant De Karmeliet, in the centre of the historical city of Bruges. Led by Geert Van Hecke, the renowned chef of De Karmeliet, you will get high level kitchen courses, given by lecturers of Hotelschool Ter Duinen.
Direct contact with people in the field is an essential part of the bachelor programme. In the first and second year of the programme, you will run restaurant De Karmeliet for several months. You will cook for external guests and manage the restaurant on a high level. In your third year, you will do an 18 weeks traineeship in an internationally renowned gourmet restaurant.
The Culinary Arts specialization is an initiative of the Flanders Culinary Arts Centre (FCAC), a collaboration between VIVES University of Applied Sciences and Hotel School Ter Duinen
