A good way to approach Greek culture is from the perspective of freedom. Greece has a long, proud tradition of freedom, science, and philosophy, and this is still part of everyday life in Greece.

Yes, Greece is perhaps known best for its food. Greek food is known all over the world for its light and fresh flavors. From olives to lamb dishes, Greek food represents the very best of the Mediterranean. It’s also extremely healthy. Imagine yourself heading from class to a small restaurant overlooking the sea to enjoy some pita and hummus, and you can get an idea of what everyday life is like in Greece. Greece is also a country in touch with its past. Nowhere is this more obvious than in Athens, where the Parthenon stands high above the modern city. But Greece’s magnificent history isn’t just found in Athens. Out on the islands, you can find the past too. A great example of this is Shipwreck Bay on Zakynthos (Zante), where a shipwreck lays on an isolated beach.

As for the language, Greek is one of the oldest languages in the world. It is the language of Plato, Aristotles, and of the millions of people who come from modern Greece. Greek is a working language of the EU, and Greek-speaking communities can be found all over the world. Learning Greek is a challenge, but doing so opens the door to an ancient and fascinating culture. If you find that you become good at Greek, you can even take the Greek National Foreign Language Test (KPG) to get a diploma in the Greek language.
