Study in Azerbaijan: Application Process

As is the case with many other countries in the region, you need to apply directly to individual schools rather than through a national central portal. However, most schools follow a fairly similar standard procedure. The application window is generally open from 15 May to early July.

It goes something like this:

Gather Your Documents Together

Like the State Migration Service, Azeri schools want to know who you are at the time of application. You’ll need to send two copies of the identity page of your passport, a document from a licensed medical professional showing you to be in rude health and HIV-negative. These documents can be sent in either Azerbaijani or English. You’ll need a notarized translation if your documents are in another language. Gather all of these bits and pieces together in a single PDF file. It’ll make life a lot easier for both you and the school.

Provide transcripts

If you’re applying for an undergraduate course, provide your high school transcripts. If you’re applying for a postgraduate course, provide these and your undergraduate transcripts. For both levels of study, Azeri schools will want to see your CV - both professional and academic - and a letter of motivation telling them why you want to study your chosen course in Azerbaijan. Some more competitive courses, like engineering or medicine, also require letters of recommendation. Again, all of this documentation must be provided in Azerbaijani or English or with a notarized translation. You must also provide evidence of your English abilities, even if you’re from an Anglophone country like the UK or the US.

Note: If you’re applying for a PhD in Azerbaijan, you must provide all of your documentation in Azerbaijani only. The translations must be notarized. 

The Azerbaijani application process can be bureaucratic, but it is also comprehensive and ensures that you and your chosen school are a good fit for one another.
