Career

Van Hall Larenstein has close connections to the international business world and NGO’s. This allows you to apply the theory into practice: besides obtaining highly valued work experience during internships abroad, students go on excursions at companies where they work on real-life cases. We also invite professionals over to give guest lectures. We strongly believe that international experience is crucial in the development of our students as intercultural competencies are required in almost all career fields. Right from the start, you will develop a professional network of students and colleagues from all over the world.

Locations

Van Hall Larenstein has 2 locations. In Velp we are located on the Larenstein Estate: a modern building surrounded by luscious greenery. It only takes a few minutes by bike to get to the vibrant city centre of Arnhem. The second location is in Leeuwarden, European capital of culture in 2018. Leeuwarden has canals flowing through the city and it's closely located to the Dutch islands.

Both Leeuwarden and Arnhem are medium sized student cities with loads of international students. Throughout the year there are festivals, markets and concerts where you can hang out with your friends and meet the locals. Amsterdam, The Hague, Berlin and Paris are only a short train journey away.

Campuses

Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences has two campuses:

Leeuwarden (North)

The newly renovated campus building in Leeuwarden includes a large library, laboratories, technology halls, greenhouses on the roof and the Grand Café. At the heart of the Friesland region and located near the Dutch islands, Leeuwarden is a charming student city featuring many nightclubs, cafes, museums, and canals flowing through the city.

Velp (East)

The modern Velp campus building is situated at the beautiful Larenstein Estate, where it is surrounded by luscious greenery, and only a few minutes away from the vibrant city centre of Arnhem. Boasting a vibrant nightlife on the Korenmarkt, the Rijn river, and an array of student associations, Arnhem is a dynamic and multicultural city with many great initiatives.

Student lifestyle

Both Velp (Arnhem) and Leeuwarden are vibrant student cities offering a plethora of entertainment and enjoyed by both residents and visitors. From lively nightclubs, to various museums and theatres, forests, national parks and green spaces, cinemas, multicultural cuisine, festivals, and charming shopping streets, there is always something to do or see!

Student Associations

There are several student associations active in Velp and Leeuwarden. Many are targeted at specific study programs;however, there are also student associations open to all students in general:

Ambrosia is Van Hall Larenstein’s brand new International Study Association, created for all students from the English taught programs in Velp to connect, share, network, exchange, collaborate and communicate.

In Leeuwarden, Osiris is the main student association at VHL, offering activities throughout the year to both Dutch and international students. Additionally, Leeuwarden Student City, an initiative created in collaboration between the universities and the city council, covers a wide range of student matters including everything from accommodation to sports, and events.

Sports

There are a variety of sporting facilities and gyms in both Leeuwarden and Velp (Arnhem). It is possible to also purchase a student sport card which offers discounts on many of the facilities, and many gyms also offer special student subscriptions.

Accommodation

Student accommodation in The Netherlands differs from many other countries: most higher education institutions (including Van Hall Larenstein) do not offer housing on campus and most Dutch and international students find their own accommodation on the private market. However, many private housing agencies, websites and Facebook groups offer affordable student housing (shared apartments, individual rooms or studios) in both Leeuwarden and Velp.

For more information on housing, check the institute's website!
